Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-06-23
These terms govern your use of the Alfa mobile app and consumer subscription service operated by Alfa Kennsla ehf., reg. no. 481225-1320 (“Alfa”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account and using the service, you accept these terms.
If you use Alfa as part of a school programme, your school has a separate agreement with Alfa that governs that use. See our Privacy Policy for Schools. These consumer terms do not apply in that context.
1. The Service
Alfa is a mathematics learning app that builds a personal learning path for each user from a placement test and guides them through daily exercises in Icelandic. Answer checking is rule-based and progress is measured numerically. The consumer subscription service is delivered via the iOS and Android mobile app.
2. User accounts
You may create an account using Google Sign-In, Sign in with Apple, or email registration. You are responsible for the security of your account credentials. Alfa may suspend or terminate accounts that show signs of abuse, sharing, or unauthorised access.
3. Subscription, free trial, and auto-renewal
- Alfa is free to use with one exercise per day. The subscription (“Alfa Plus”) unlocks three exercises per day and additional features, such as starring problems.
- New subscribers may receive a one-month free trial with full Alfa Plus features unlocked. The trial begins immediately upon activation.
- Payment, billing, and renewal are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play, which act as merchant of record.
- The subscription auto-renews at the end of each billing period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date (Apple’s rule).
- You may cancel at any time through your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you retain access until the end of the current paid period.
- Price changes apply to renewals with at least 30 days’ notice.
4. Payments and refunds
Apple App Store and Google Play handle all payment, billing, and tax processing. Alfa does not see or store your card details.
Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google according to their respective refund policies, not by Alfa. Questions about your subscription history should be directed to Apple Support or Google Play Support.
5. Right of withdrawal (digital content)
Under Icelandic consumer law (Act No. 16/2016 on consumer contracts), distance contracts for digital content normally carry a 14-day right of withdrawal. By starting the free trial or activating a subscription, you give your explicit consent for performance to begin immediately and acknowledge that you thereby lose the right of withdrawal. This is standard for subscription apps.
6. Learning content and grading
Exercises and teaching content are authored in advance, and answer checking is rule-based. The content is intended as a learning aid and may contain errors or inaccuracies.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the service for any unlawful purpose
- Share your account credentials with others
- Scrape, crawl, or otherwise extract content from the service automatically
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or circumvent the service’s security
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the application
8. Intellectual property
- Alfa Kennsla ehf. owns all rights to the software, brand, design, and content of the service.
- Your subscription grants a limited, non-transferable licence to use the service for personal, non-commercial learning.
- Your answers and progress remain your property. By using the service, you grant Alfa a limited licence to process them solely to deliver the service to you.
9. Service availability
Alfa makes reasonable efforts to keep the service available but does not guarantee uninterrupted access. Maintenance, updates, and unforeseen outages may cause temporary disruption.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Icelandic law, Alfa is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the service. Alfa’s total aggregate liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid Alfa in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
11. Termination
- You may cancel your subscription at any time through your App Store or Google Play settings.
- You may delete your account in the app. Deletion is subject to a 30-day grace period during which you can recover the account by signing back in. After that period, the account and associated personal data are permanently deleted (see the Privacy Policy for details).
- Alfa may suspend or terminate access for material breach of these terms or misuse of the service, with reasonable notice unless the breach requires immediate action.
12. Schools
If you use Alfa as part of a school programme, your school or municipality has its own agreement with Alfa Kennsla ehf. that governs that use. These consumer terms do not apply.
Personal data processing in the school context is covered by our Privacy Policy for Schools.
13. Changes to these terms
Alfa may update these terms. Material changes will be notified at least 30 days in advance through the app or by email. By continuing to use the service after the changes take effect, you accept the updated terms.
14. Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the laws of Iceland. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by agreement shall be referred to the Icelandic courts, with Reykjavík District Court having first-instance jurisdiction.
